SOMATOM Definition Dual Source CT Scanner
The SOMATOM Definition Dual Source CT Scanner is the first of its kind in North Texas. Working completely differently than a traditional CT scanner, the Definition features two revolutionary X-ray tubes mounted at right angles to each other and both about the size of a dumbbell. Each tube splits x-ray beams into 64 parallel slices, doubling resolution compared to a traditional 64-slice CT, thus cutting acquisition time in half. This means as much as 40% less radiation exposure for our patients. Because a lower base dose of radiation is administered, technicians can increase the viewing power of the scan, while keeping radiation exposure at safe levels.
The Dual Source CT can capture the beating heart at any heart rate, so the heart doesn’t have to be slowed by drugs, which can delay testing for up to a critical 30 minutes and can mask the very conditions that are being tested for. The Definition also promises to be more effective for obese patients. The machine also has a larger bore size than traditional CT machines – allowing more room for patients and a wider range of body types.
